In this workshop, tutor Elizabeth Williamson will take you through the basic stitches and techniques of Shetland lace knitting. At the end of the session, you will have a swatch of the Rosebud pattern on a garter base. 

It is a great pattern and can be used in different arrangements to form the centre of haps or shawls and scarfs. 

Skills required

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels with basic knitting skills (casting on, knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing) 

Materials required

You will need: Size 4mm needles and either a lace weight or 4ply/sock weight yarn (preferably in a light colour to make the stitches more easily seen) 

Pre-workshop instructions: 

  • Cast on 31 stitches using 4mm needles and your yarn 

  • Knit 6 rows of garter stitch 

Teacher biography

Elizabeth was born in Shetland then grew up surrounded by knitters. She was taught to knit by her mother at the age of three and has continued to knit ever since. She now lives in England where she runs Shetland lace workshops and talks as well as delivering her online lace knitting classes. Elizabeth is also one of Shetland Wool Weeks Shetland lace tutors. She is passionate about teaching lace knitting and creating new designs which reflect her Shetland heritage and its rich culture.
