Creating a new interpretation of traditional techniques in handknitting: from cabled Fair Isle to Knitweave, intarsia and Gansey. A talk by Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell.
Di and Sheila will explore the design process using 4 examples of reinventing knit in new ways through a slide show and samples. They will discuss the journey from inspiration, through colour, shape, form and stitch.
Speaker biography
Di Gilpin with her production manager and friend Sheila Greenwell run a knitwear design studio in Fife whose origins are in a semi-ruined croft on the Isle of Skye where Di settled in 1983 with little more than a rucksack a tent, wool and knitting needles!
Over the years Di has worked with many yarn companies designing knitting patterns and yarns, and together with Sheila has recently written a source book for Gansey Knitters. They work with leading designers including La Fetiche, Graeme Black, Erdos 1436, Hancock VA, Mark Fast, Topshop Unique, Cabbages & Roses and Nike to create collections and one-off pieces and special commissions for private clients, fashion designers and the catwalk, inspired by Scotland’s rich cultural heritage.
With dedication to the authenticity of yarn, making and design - all of the one place - they also have their own yarn label, Lalland Lambswool.
